ASCENSION EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

College Counseling

College counseling at Ascension begins in the eighth grade with evening presentations for students and parents for each grade and annual individual counseling meetings. Students in grades 9-12 are also invited to sign up for all college representative information sessions that occur throughout the year.

Eighth Grade

For eighth grade students, presentations and discussions cover high school credit opportunities, meeting graduation requirements, understanding the pre-ACT tests, turning middle school potential into high school success, goal-setting, and academic advising.

Freshmen Year

During the freshman year, students learn the importance of maintaining a quality GPA, understanding the high school transcript, and developing effective resumes. They are also advised about the real cost of college and provided with information resources and academic advising.

Sophomore Year

Emphasis during the sophomore year concerns standardized testing, ACT vs. SAT, exploring leadership opportunities, assessing academic progress, and academic advising.

Junior Year

The junior year focuses on the search/list/visit process. In addition to attending a national college fair, juniors take a four-day college tour of six to eight colleges and universities to compare different types of colleges and help them to determine the right kind of fit for them.

Senior year

For seniors, the presentations include a college application workshop (application basics, the Common Application, the application essay, and scholarship and financial aid applications) and a presentation on transitioning to college. Individual meetings are available as early as July and throughout the year to address application questions, acceptances, final decisions, and more.
