An appreciation of the fine arts is encouraged through the art, music and drama curricula at Ascension Episcopal School.
At the preschool level, art helps develop fine motor skills while encouraging creativity. Preschool teachers integrate art into grade level theme units. At the lower and middle school levels, art classes focus on the principles and elements of design. Classes include experiences in the various media, as well as art history and appreciation.
Music education at the preschool level emphasizes the development of vocal, rhythmic and aural skills. Activities include singing, moving, performing and exploring with instruments. The goal of lower and middle school music programs is for each student to be able to listen to music with understanding and discrimination. Music experiences are directed toward helping students discover ways to participate more fully in their musical environment. Grade level musical performances are highlighted each year. Additionally, Middle school students may choose to participate in choir.
Middle school student participation in the drama program involves the pupil in all aspects of theatre production from the selection of the play to performance night. Presenting a theatre production helps the students have confidence in themselves and in their ability to perform before a large audience.
Middle school students participate in drama on a nine-week rotation basis. In seventh grade, the music and drama departments combine to produce a musical. Eighth grade students participate in an art, drama, music, public speaking and choir rotation throughout the school year.
